AN Aberystwyth woman is backing a campaign for organ donors after seeing first hand how important organ donation is.
Hanna Lockwood, who has had two kidney transplants, has urged Ceredigion residents to sign up as organ donors as part of the Donate Wales campaign asking people to join the register and save a life.
Her first transplant was in 2000 when Hanna, who was then 12, suffered kidney failure after a bout of e-coli. After complications during an operation, Hanna’s kidney had to be removed. Then, in 2003 Hanna, who is now studying to be a nurse, had a second transplant from a registered donor.
Hanna said she was pleased to support the Donate Wales campaign as she knows how important registered organ donors are. She said: “Renal failure is something I have had to live with since a very early age, but thanks to a successful transplant, I have been able to live a normal life.
“If more people joined the organ donor register, and I know they want to, it could save hundreds of other Welsh peoples’ lives. So please join the organ donor register and save a life this new year."

Organ, tissue donation is a lifesaving gift
''Grieving family proud of daughter's heroism,'' I would like to thank the Hankee family and their daughter, Krysta, for their tremendous strength in choosing to support organ donation.
Lifesaving and life-enhancing transplants could not happen without the generosity of donors and their families, who in moments of extreme tragedy decide to support organ and tissue donation.
Citizens of this region have been very supportive of donation, particularly in 2009. Gift of Life Donor Program -- the nonprofit, federally designated organ procurement organization serving eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware -- coordinated a record-number of donations last year. The gifts of 439 organ donors allowed for a total of 1,114 lifesaving transplants.
Unfortunately, the work is far from done. More than 6,000 people are waiting for a lifesaving transplant, joining more than 100,000 nationwide.
Gift of Life educates and encourages more people to add the donor designation to their driver's license or state ID. In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, it's easy to add the donor designation online. Just one donor can save or enhance the lives of 50 people.
