Toronto - A recent provincial organ donations report shows that North Bay and Sudbury are the two top Ontario cities in organ donations but Toronto stands dead last.

There are constant stories about how cold Toronto is and how people in this city do not care for one another. A documentary called

A new study may actually back up that theory. Toronto is dead last when it comes to organ donations, according to the Toronto Star. The donation rate ranges in various regions of the Greater Toronto Area but the lowest rate is in Scarborough and Markham. Toronto’s donor registration is between four and ten per cent.

North Bay and Sudbury have the highest organ donation registration rate and the rest of Ontario averages about 17 per cent. In Hamilton the rate is 25 per cent, 20 per cent in London and 15 per cent in Ottawa.

Experts believe there are a number of factors to why Toronto has the lowest rate in the province, reports City News. Reasons could be because they have the red and white health cards, the registration process, the average age in the city and even the small town effect.

The report further showed that 90 per cent of Ontarians supported organ donation but only 17 per cent actually registered.

To raise awareness and the importance of organ donation, the Trillium Gift of Life will reach out to leaders in Toronto’s different ethnic communities to discuss the issue.

Do you still have a paper organ donation card?

The cards are faded and worn, their corners ragged, their signatures and dates barely legible. In the past they may have meant, for someone, the difference between life and death. Canada just marked National Organ and Tissue Donation awareness week, a time when we’re asked to give — should the unforeseen occur — our consent to donate organs, eyes, skin, or heart valves to a person in need. One donation can save as many as eight lives, after all.

As those paper rectangles wear out, however, it can make one wonder: can a life-or-death situation be trusted to a few disintegrating bits of card stock? What if it got coffee or ketchup on it? What if it got left in a jeans pocket and tossed in the laundry? Some of us are even carrying around cards that have been phased out without knowing it.

Organ donor cards have been issued in dark green and burgundy, as well as canary yellow, both made obsolete a few years ago by the green-and-white Ontario Health cards. But survey your friends and you will find that many still faithfully carry the old cards, though they serve no other purpose than to thicken wallets.

According to the Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ontario’s organ and tissue donation agency, the paper card system is on its way out. It is being replaced by something that doesn’t fall apart: a computer registry that logs your consent, and then indicates it, more credibly, on your green health card. Those who still have signed paper cards are encouraged to register at www.giftoflife.on.ca. If you have an old red-and-white health card, you can download a Gift of Life Consent Form online at the same website. A good thing, perhaps, that a decision so crucial doesn’t need to be left up to something so transient.
