DENVER - The story of Chad and Ryan Arnold continues to spread and attract national attention. Ryan Arnold died a few days after donating part of his liver to his brother, Chad, who needed a transplant because his condition was deteriorating.
Ryan knew about the risks, but he wouldn't have made any different decisions because he believed the risk was worth saving his brother's life.
FOX31's Ginger Delgado first told us the story about the Arnolds and what happened to them. Their experience has brought national attention to live organ donation, and the risks people need to consider before proceeding with surgery.
"You need to be informed about the outcomes for your surgeon and your hospital. Educate yourself," says Donna Luebke, a nurse practitioner who donatd a kidney to her sister.
Luebke says you should ask many questions, including how many transplants of the type you're having the surgeon does per year, and what the short and long-term outcomes have been.
